Job Description:
The Adult Oncology Registered Dietitian provides comprehensive nutrition care to adult cancer patients across the continuum of care (inpatient and/or outpatient). This role focuses on the prevention and management of malnutrition, nutrition-related side effects of cancer treatments, and improving overall patient outcomes and quality of life.
Key Responsibilities:
- Clinical Nutrition Care
- Conduct comprehensive nutrition assessments for adult oncology patients using evidence-based tools.
- Diagnose nutrition problems and develop individualized nutrition care plans.
- Monitor and evaluate patient progress, adjusting interventions as needed.
- Provide medical nutrition therapy for patients undergoing chemotherapy, radiation, immunotherapy, and surgical treatments.
- Symptom & Side Effect Management
- Manage nutrition-related side effects such as:
- Nausea and vomiting
- Mucositis
- Dysphagia
- Cachexia and unintended weight loss
- Provide enteral and parenteral nutrition recommendations when indicated.
- Patient & Caregiver Education
- Educate patients and families on:
- Nutrition during cancer treatment and survivorship
- Food safety for immunocompromised patients
- Managing treatment-related symptoms through diet
- Develop and distribute educational materials.
Work Environment:
- Hospital inpatient units, outpatient oncology clinics, or cancer centers
- May involve exposure to immunocompromised patients
- Standard clinical hours; occasional flexibility may be required
- Physical Requirements:
- Ability to stand, walk, and sit for extended periods
- Ability to lift educational materials or light equipment
- Frequent interaction with patients and healthcare staff
Required:
- Registered Dietitian (RD/RDN) credential (Commission on Dietetic Registration)
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Nutrition, Dietetics, or related field
- Licensed or eligible for licensure in the state of practice
- Experience in clinical nutrition (hospital or outpatient setting)
Preferred:
Experience in oncology nutrition
Board Certified Specialist in Oncology Nutrition (CSO) through Commission on Dietetic Registration
Experience with enteral and parenteral nutrition support
Familiarity with oncology treatment modalities
